NEW SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS!

A special 12 week Sunday School class begins February 23 in the downstairs “Conference Classroom.”  Ed Kemp and Mike Blewett will share the teaching responsibility as they look at the basics of our Christian religion.  The text is the famous “Training for Service.”  Subjects covered include things like how we got our Bible, people of the Old and New Testament, and the life of Christ.  It’ll be taught on an adult level.

Consider this your invitation to come!  We’d like you to attend.  Even if you’re well acquainted with Scripture, this class will be a good refresher.  It’s also intended to teach you how to teach others about the Bible.  It is important.  Ask the teachers or the preacher for more information.

2012 SHEPHERDING GROUPS

As we begin 2012 we all need to carefully consider which Elder’s Shepherding Flock we would like to be in. The Elders are responsible for assisting us in our spiritual growth, so you need to make sure you pick an Elder that you feel comfortable talking to. The Elders for this year are: Jerry Henry, Pete Hoffman and Paul Ward. After prayer and consideration, if you have decided on a specific group, please contact the Elder that you have chosen and let them know to put your name to their list.

JUST A REMINDER

As you know NETWORKs is up and functioning again, so I thought that we should remind everyone of this. Also I thought that now might be a good time to remind everyone that should someone, member or not, approach you with a financial need that you should refer them to the Elders. Pete Hoffman is currently acting as the point man for this. There are two reasons for doing this. First, with a single point of contact, Pete in our case, who is developing an understanding of when we should send people to NETWORKs or use our own benevolent funds to provide assistance. Secondly, this single contact person can better distinguish between those who are genuinely in need of assistance and those who are repeatedly in “need”. It will also reduce the situation where someone may approach you on one side of the building then go to the other side and approach someone else.

Serving an Awesome God,

Paul Ward

“GOOD GROOMING”

I heard a famous preacher teach that a person is like an onion. His concern was for those who buy into the popular idea that a person has to look within himself to really know himself.  This pop psychology approach to life is highly overrated.  The preacher’s point is that a person who looks to the inside to find meaning and significance will find what an onion would find.  After going down layer after layer, eventually you end up with nothing.

Before a person meets Jesus, he is like an onion.  All pleasure and accomplishment is temporary and incomplete.  Such a person can enjoy life well-enough, I suppose, but anyone who lives simply for his own purposes and advancement will find only shallowness.  Family and friends can fill the void, but there will always be something missing.  The “inside” of such a person is just the same “stuff.”

All this changes when you become a Christian. You have a new agenda.  Instead of living just for yourself, you now have an important, new direction.  You will have an actual purpose in life that is eternal in nature.

This will automatically affect the way you look at others.  You will see them as people made in the image of God; your relationship with them will suddenly deepen.  For those who are Christians, the fact that you share Jesus will bring you closer together. For those who are not, your concern for their soul and their real needs will grow.

I suppose a certain amount of introspection is healthy, but my advice is to seek God first, and then worry about yourself.  In this way you can truly live up to your potential, instead of being like a disassembled onion.

Mike
